Interval Training For Beginners

Interval training has become quite popular for beginner and expert fitness enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re doing cardio or strength training, exercising in intervals boost your results. If you’re looking to lose weight or get in shape, consider adding interval training to your current workout.

What Is Interval Training?

Interval training is the process of increasing intensity for a short period of time. For example, if you’re running you might run at a ten minute mile pace for five minutes. You would then increase your running pace to an eight minute mile for one minute. Then you’d return to your normal pace.

You can add intervals to your strength training routine. Instead of running faster, you might add more repetitions to a set. Or you might add weight to a few repetitions.

What Are the Benefits of Interval Training?

Interval training offers a number of benefits. The first and perhaps most apparent is that you’ll push yourself just a little bit harder which burns fat and builds muscle. Intervals can help you get past the mindset that you just can’t work out any harder. Your perceived maximum effort changes.

Intervals also help you get stronger. In the case of running, you’ll actually increase your ability to run faster and farther when you add intervals to your workout. When you’re strength training or toning your muscles, interval training helps you achieve results faster.

And interval training has been proven to burn more calories during a workout. That means you’ll see results faster. If you’re working out to lose weight or get in great shape, fast results help you stay motivated.

It's also easier on your heart and body - the human body was not designed for endurance exercise, but naturally gravitates towards higher and lower intervals of exertion. Exercising in intervals means helping your body perform in the way it was meant to, and strengthening all of your systems in a natural and healthy way.

Plus it's just fun! Varying your exercises, and exercise level, gives you a great workout and keeps you from getting bored, so you enjoy your exercise time more. And that's really the best motivator of all.

Jillian Michaels is Kicking My Butt!

Wow, well it's been a while since I have visited my Yoga Meltdown video on here.... I would like to report some great progress, but the truth is I've been a bit lazy lately (see, it even happens to me sometimes), and haven't been doing my yoga workout as often as I should. I'm still doing it - it's just only about once a week lately (although, to be fair, I have been throwing some other workouts into the mix, so it's not like I've just been sitting around most of the time).

Anyway, I've been doing Level 1 of Jillian Michaels' Yoga Meltdown workout since last July - fairly regularly, except for during my back pain episode last fall. I am someone who is gung-ho about a workout for a while - love it, can't get enough of it, etc., until I get bored. So lately I've been feeling less motivated about the Yoga Meltdown workout, and I figured what the heck, I'll try Level 2 - it can't be THAT much harder, right??

Ummmm...WRONG. This workout is some serious stuff! I'm in pretty good shape (and have been doing yoga for 8 months now), and there were exercises in there that I couldn't even do - not even the beginner version! I was seriously sore (my entire body) for 3 full days. Not that it wasn't fun...or it will be, someday, when I'm ready for it. But for now, it gave me a new-found appreciation for Level 1, and I will be enjoying this one for some time to come. :-)

As a funny, slightly related note, I was on an exercise forum the other day, and someone was asking for a good, challenging workout video "without an annoyingly perky instructor". Someone else had suggested a Jillian Michaels video, with the comment that "Not only is she not annoyingly perky, she seems like she would come to your house and punch you if you don't work hard enough."  Ha ha! So true....

Have Fun with Yoga Meltdown

Jillian Michaels: Yoga MeltdownMy new favorite workout routine is Jillian Michaels’ “Yoga Meltdown” video. As you will learn, some of my favorite ways to exercise are using exercise videos — they’re easy to find, inexpensive, and extremely convenient — just grab one, pop it into your DVD player, clear a space, and you’ve got an instant at-home gym!  (Equipment may or may not be required, based on the video  you choose, but I love the ones where nothing is needed but perhaps an exercise mat or folded blanket.)

I picked up Yoga Meltdown one day recently on a whim while out shopping — I was getting a little tired of my previous Pilates video, and had never tried Yoga before as I thought it would be both too difficult, and too slow/boring for me. Not the case with this workout!

This workout kicks my butt, challenges me, and makes me feel great!  My puny upper body strength has already almost doubled in less than 2 months!  I’m only on Level 1 right now, but looking forward to stepping up to Level 2 in a couple of months.

Whether you are a beginner, or an avid practitioner of yoga, this workout I think will have something for you. I love how you can see both the beginning and advanced versions of each exercise at the same time, and I also love Jillian’s no-fluff, no-frills style. This DVD doesn’t have a long intro at the beginning, which you have to skip or sit through every time – it is straight to the point, clear, and offers great instruction to both beginner and advanced students.

Check out this fun, challenging workout – I bet you’ll love it! (You can find it on Amazon for under $10.00.)
