Video: Treadmill Trainer - Your Personal Running Coach

Whether you're training for a marathon, or just running to get in shape, having a coach can really help you achieve your running goals. Hiring a personal trainer is great, but if you can't afford it, don't have the time to schedule regular sessions at the gym, or just don't want to spend the money, there are other options available. This quick video gives you a brief overview of the expert coaching sessions available through Treadmill Trainer. A variety of different Ipod workouts provide you with coaching and encouragement throughout your workouts, whether you prefer to run on a treadmill or outdoors - it's like having your very own personal running coach perched on your shoulder (but without all the extra weight). :-)

I love all of Yuri Elkaim's fitness programs - they are consistently high quality, affordable, and based on common sense and true health principles - not hype. Check out the Treadmill Trainer website, and find a program to help you achieve your running goals.

The Treadmill Trainer running workouts are so effective because of their interval design. Bouts of high and lower intensity allow the runner to get a better training effect with less time running.

Not Your Typical Ab Exercises...

Check out this article by one of our favorite fitness experts, Mike Geary, on the 3 best ab exercises - this unique ab workout contains no situps or crunches - it's not only not boring, but it's actually pretty fun - and gets great results!

3 Best Ab Exercises:

Instead of the typical ab routines that we see so often with crunches, situps, leg lifts, etc... I like to give my readers better options for metabolism-boosting high intensity workouts that work their entire body while also working their abs... thus building rock hard abs & core, but also creating a much better fat-burning workout than a typical ab workout.

I'm going to show you an example today of one of my favorite "ab workouts" that doesn't include any direct "ab exercises" at all. This is actually a full body workout that works your abs pretty hard indirectly, and stimulates a good metabolism boost!  It's in a tri-set format (similar to a super-set but alternating between 3 exercises instead of 2).

Here they are:

1a. Renegade Dumbbell Rows
1b. Front Squats with Barbell
1c. Mountain Climbers on Floor

Video - What is PACE Express? How & Why It Works for Fat Loss

This video gives an in-depth look at the PACE workout system and the philosophy behind it, with creator Dr. Al Sears. Dr. Sears explains why PACE works so well for health, fitness, and fat loss, and how it is different from other workout programs. He also explains the importance of distinguishing between weight loss and FAT loss, which is a very important difference to understand for the sake of your health.

Personally, I love PACE for two main reasons: 1. It only takes 15 minutes a day, and 2. It's FUN!  I've been doing the PACE Express workout for a couple of weeks now, and am very happy with it so far - I'll post a detailed review of my own soon. In the meantime, learn more about this fun new way to exercise in the video below.

Should Teenagers Join A Gym?

Getting fit is important for everyone regardless of age - and that includes teenagers. But does that mean that they need to join a gym? Healthy teens become healthy adults, and habits established in the teenage years will carry over into adulthood - whether good or bad. But is joining a gym the answer?

There are pros and cons to teens joining a gym. Keep reading to find out more about making the right decision for your teen when it comes to exercise.

Pros

1. When it comes to working out, it is more fun and motivating in groups. When you can bring a friend, both of you can feed off each other and get the work done.

The gym setting can be great for that. Those gyms that offer family memberships allow everyone to unwind from their day and exercise together. Larger gyms do offer these memberships and a wide variety of activities to participate in. Not only are there weight machines but also cardio fitness like treadmills, elliptical machines and stationary bicycles.

2. Personal training is also a good feature of gyms. For the teen who has never done exercise before or who doesn’t know what to do, a personal trainer can help. They can tailor a program to the needs of someone your teen’s age. Be sure to check to see if they have trainers who are certified to work with young people effectively.

Your child can get individual attention each week to help them combine the right amount of cardio and weights for their health. A personal trainer can also help them to set personal weight loss or fitness goals that they can follow from that point on.

3. Many gyms have a wide range of fun exercise classes. Classroom settings are great because they have done all the thinking for you. For example, if you take a yoga class, your job is to follow the instructor. Depending on your fitness level, he or she will guide your through the moves necessary to achieve success in the class, and your teen may feel less awkward when surrounded by others performing the same activity.

Cons

1. Gym memberships can be expensive. For an individual it can cost around $50 or more. When you throw in a family membership, you are looking at about $100 or more per month. Some families can’t pay that much in an effort to allow their teens to work out in a gym. And, contracts are often for three years. If your teen decides not to go or gets interested in something else, the parents are still paying that fee each month.

Gym at Work 3

2. Not all gyms are equipped the same. They don’t all have instructors that can teach you how to use the equipment. For a teen, that can lead to walking around feeling bored, or doing a little but not really staying motivated.

3. You have to get there to work out. If your teen doesn’t drive, that means that they have to get mom or dad to drop them off. If it is an inconvenient time, then they won’t get to use their membership that much.

Should teens join a gym? If the family is going regularly, then it won’t be much of a stretch to get your teen participating. How much there is to do will depend on your gym. But, once locked into a contract it will be hard to break if your teen changes their mind later. Assess these factors when looking into joining a gym for your teen, and make sure it is a good fit before you sign anything.

Tips For Hiring a Personal Trainer to Meet Your Fitness Goals

More and more people are turning to the experts to help them get in shape and lose weight. Personal trainers are able to guide you to the right fitness program for your personal needs and goals. It’s a great way to get motivated, eliminate fitness mistakes that can stall your success, and focus on your long term goals.

English: JAVIER_LAYUS_PERSONAL_TRAINER_ Españo...

However, it's important that you hire the right personal trainer. They’re human just like you which means that they have personality quirks, fitness philosophies, and their own style. Additionally, like any industry there are some great trainers and some not so good trainers. A little screening and knowledge will help you hire the right personal trainer for your needs. Here are some things to look for when hiring a personal trainer:

Education
When hiring a personal trainer make sure they’re certified with a reputable training organization. For example, the ACSM, American College of Sports Medicine, and the ACE, American Council on Exercise are both good programs.

You also want to make sure that they have CPR and first aid certification just in case something should happen while you are working out.

Experience
In addition to education, personal training experience is helpful. Yes, everyone has to start somewhere and if you get a really good feeling with a new trainer that’s fine. However, a more experienced trainer who specializes in your goals and fitness needs may be a better way to spend your time and money.

Also, if you have any specific medical problems or needs then it’s helpful to have someone who is experienced and knowledgeable in that area.

Personality and Style
Ideally, your trainer will listen to your needs and goals and create a program just for you. Some trainers have programs that they’ve created already and they are looking for clients to fit to their mold. That’s okay, just be aware of what you need and make sure it’s a good fit.

Personal trainer assessing a client's goals an...

It’s also important for your trainer to be focused on you during your sessions and to be involved. You don’t want a trainer who puts you on the weight machine and then walks away. Ask your trainer if they’ll be tracking your progress and assessing the program as you go. Hopefully they answer with a quick yes. Ask them how they assess and what their policy is.

Pay attention to their personality and style. Does it seem motivating? Will you enjoy working with this person? Do you trust them? If not, then they’re not the right trainer for you.

Finally, it’s important to compare the price of your potential trainers. Personal training can be expensive but it’s also a great way to ‘cut to the chase’ and start reaching your fitness goals right away. If price is an issue you may be able to find a better rate if you participate in group training sessions.

Video - Example Of A Typical CrossFit Workout

The first CrossFit video I watched online made me somewhat terrified. It looked sooo hard and fast and hard on the body - and everyone in the video looked incredibly muscular and fit.

But after watching a few more, including this quick example of a typical CrossFit workout, I found myself smiling with excitement - I really wanna try it! Wow, it looks like such an amazing workout, and it's great that you can really get such a good full-body workout in such a short amount of time.

I don't think they mention it in this video, but in one of the others, the trainer was talking about how so many of the exercises in a CrossFit workout are designed to get your body in shape for the everyday movements and tasks that you need to do in your daily life (lifting boxes, reaching up over your head to get something off a shelf, carrying things, etc.), instead of just running on a treadmill for 40 minutes, which really has no useful application for most people. I am all about functional fitness, so this sounds great to me, and seeing how much fun the people are having during this short class is inspiring and exciting.

Check it out, and find a class near you to try it for yourself!

One Man's Personal Fitness Story

Here is an article shared by a guy who has been working hard on his fitness for some time - he prefers not to share his name, but it's a great story, so check it out, and hopefully you'll find it helpful or even inspirational!

My Personal Fitness Journey
-By Anonymous

More and more people are looking into ways of losing weight. Obesity is an ever increasing problem and being over-weight can cause many different health problems.

There are many different diets out there which try to help people to lose their excess fat, but  these can be very difficult to follow as the whole reason we are over weight is because we love our food! Many diets  normally recommend us to eat healthy but uninspiring foods. These diets have never really worked for me, partly because I have possibly not got the right attitude, but mainly just because I find it hard to stick to them. A month maybe, six months certainly not.

In my opinion exercise is the best way to lose weight. But going to a gym is certainly not for everyone and is somewhere I feel out of place and exposed. I always feel that people are looking, talking and laughing at me behind my back. Maybe I am just too paranoid!

I personally would recommend hiring a personal trainer. Now you might think that only the rich and famous could possibly do this but you would be wrong. There are many personal fitness trainers who are either connected to a gym or who advertise locally in newspapers or magazines.

Personal trainer assisting and correcting a cl...Personal trainer assisting and correcting a client during a fitball stretching exercise (not an actual photo of the author) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)These are specially trained people who are willing to come to your house to show you how to correctly exercise and they do not cost an arm and a leg.

If you have attempted this route before but have had a negative experience do not despair. It may well be because you just did not hit it off with that specific person. I have been using a personal trainer for the last five months and only went for him after trying out four others first.

My personal trainer is very good for me. He keeps me on my toes, and is very good at making me continue to work hard even when I want to quit. He is also very fair and seems to understand just how far to push me. Together we have worked out and agreed on a program which includes various goals for the future. He also has a good understanding of the types of food which I should and should not be eating. I am happily still able to eat a lot of foods which I like and he has also introduced me to a number of other ideas which are healthy but also very tasty.

Hiring a personal trainer was the best thing I have ever done with regards to losing weight and I would recommend it to other people. I have now lost the beer belly and still continue working hard, though it is now more as a health and overall fitness thing rather than to lose even more weight.

The trainer has even stated that I am likely to actually gain weight in the future as certain muscles grow, since muscle weighs more than fat. I will not be fat though, I will be toned and even a little muscular. I look forward to the future and can also now for the first time in a number of years enjoy shopping for clothes.

Should You Hire A Personal Trainer?

Many fitness experts and enthusiasts predict that 2012 will be the year of the personal trainer. As the health of our country becomes a greater and greater issue, more and more people are trying to lose weight and get in shape. A trained expert can help you reach your fitness goals. Additionally, personal trainers can specialize to help specific groups of people reach their goals. If you’re striving to lose weight, get in shape, and improve your life then it may be time for a personal trainer.

Personal trainer assisting and correcting a cl...Image via WikipediaReasons to Hire a Personal Trainer
There are many benefits to hiring a personal trainer. They can help motivate you. They may have specialized knowledge or they may be able to help you reach specific goals. Additionally, a personal trainer may be able to help you focus in on proper form and technique. This helps you prevent injury and get the most benefit from any exercise or movement.

Specialty Needs
If you have specialty needs then a personal trainer is an exceptional idea. For example, children and senior citizens both benefit from specialty fitness knowledge. Pregnant women do too. But you don’t have to be going through a life stage to have a specialty need.

For example, if you’re training for a competitive event or milestone a personal trainer can help you maximize your workouts for maximum benefit.

Optimal Weight Loss
A personal trainer can provide you with the instruction and guidance you need to achieve your weight loss goals more quickly. Instead of guessing about what to do and how to workout, a trainer can tell you. You skip the mistakes and get right to the success. Additionally, many personal trainers are also certified nutritionists. They know how to fuel your body properly.

Motivation Galore
If you’ve reached a plateau then a personal trainer can help you push beyond it. And if you’re just not feeling it, and everyone goes through those periods, then a personal trainer can help you feel recharged and reinvigorated. Of course the right personal trainer makes all the difference.

How to Find The Right Trainer for Your Needs
Many gyms offer personal trainers on an hourly basis. You can also find specialty trainers in your area simply by doing a quick online search. Ask friends and family members too.

Spend time searching for someone you trust. Make sure they have the proper certification and are CPR certified. Give them a “test run” to make sure you’re compatible. Personal trainers are people too. They have their own ideas, methods, and personalities. Find one that fits your needs and personality for the best results.

The Worst Ab Exercise - Avoid This if You Actually Want Sexy Six Pack Abs

The truth about ineffective abdominal exercises and "ab machines"
by Mike Geary, Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Nutrition Specialist
lean stomach and six pack abs
I was at a poker party up in North Jersey over the weekend at a friend's house.  My friend had moved into this beautiful new home about a year ago, but I had never made it up for a visit until this weekend.

Well, as they were giving us a tour of the house, we took a peek into one of their spare rooms which wasn't being used for anything. The only thing they had in this room was one of those infomercial "ab loungers" covered in dust... you know, the ab-chair looking thingy that they hawk on the infomercials as being the end-all solution to a flabby stomach... telling you that you can get a flat stomach and perfect abs just by sitting on this thing and rocking a little bit while you lazily watch tv.

The cleverly marketed infomercials for these products lure you in by showing you the ripped sexy abs of the male and female fitness models that they hired for the show (who have never actually used these gadgets themselves...they actually got their toned near-perfection bodies through following REAL workouts and strict nutrition!)

Ab LoungerImage by sparr0 via FlickrWell, since this "ab lounger" was sitting in this vacant room getting dusty, obviously it wasn't actually being used, so it was really a waste of their money that they spent on it.
Regardless, even if it was being used regularly, it would never have given my friends the results they were looking for, because these infomercial ab gadget machines (and all ab exercises for that matter), don't accomplish the most important aspect of truly achieving flat six pack abs...

THEY DON'T STIMULATE ANY FAT LOSS AT ALL!

And worse yet, just for kicks, I jumped on this "ab lounger" and gave it a try... I have to say, I've never done any abs exercise where I felt it LESS in my abs... As a matter of fact, this piece of crap lounger didn't even feel like it was making my abs work at all!

It felt more like a lounge chair I should be using to relax with a beer at a barbeque.

My point of this story is that there are still thousands of people every day that fall for these gimmicks and waste their hard-earned money on every ab-gimmick that comes out next.

So what does it REALLY take to get flat sexy six pack abs?

Check out the rest of the article here and find out....

Boredom Busters: Get A Fitness Trainer

One of the biggest obstacles to staying on track for fitness is losing motivation. People are just starting an exercise program can find themselves quickly tired of the same routine. Keeping exercise appealing and maintaining a good fitness perspective is key to long-term success.

If you had to watch the exact same episode of your favorite television show every day for the rest of your life, you would probably be banging your head against the wall by the end of the week. You would change the channel, pick up a book, or do anything you could to avoid something you once enjoyed.

Personal trainer monitoring a client's movemen...Image via WikipediaYet many people starting on a fitness program feel compelled to follow the same routine, day after day after day, and consequently fall off the exercise wagon due to sheer boredom. That is why the services of a fitness trainer can prove to be a great help in keeping your fitness program lively and engaging.

Fitness trainers are those who are expert in analyzing and creating a fitness program that is right for you. They are the ones who will calculate your appropriateness to a certain program with regards to your “fitness level,” create the program according to your specific needs, and keep you stimulated and inspired by giving you activities that will not bore you.

But then again, as with other entities included in the fitness world, not all fitness trainers are created equal. They may vary depending on the different types of training that they have, the health education they have acquired, and the skills that they have learned.

Hence, it is important to consider some factors that will determine if a certain fitness trainer is right for you.

Here are some things to look for:

1. Certification

Like any item or product, the quality is sometimes measured and determined through the certification that goes with it. Hence, before you choose your fitness trainer, it is important to verify if the trainer is duly certified by a highly regarded fitness association.

It is also best to choose a trainer that has a CPR certification or first aid qualifications.

2. Education/Training

Be sure to choose a fitness trainer with adequate training and education as far as health and physical fitness is concerned.

Even though it is not necessary, trainers who have acquired education connected with health or any other related field will definitely have an edge over the others.

Fitness trainer Billy Blanks shows a female wo...Image via Wikipedia3. Knows How to Give the Right Attention

A good fitness trainer should know how to provide his or her client their undivided attention whenever their session is going on. In this way, the trainer will be able to focus more on the details that need attention and immediate consideration or correction.

4. Knows How to Track Development

It is best to choose a fitness trainer that knows how to track his or her client’s progress as far as fitness is concerned.

In this way, the trainer will be able to generate new activities and training designed specifically for a particular result desired by the client, and being able to see and track the progress towards your goals will help keep you motivated and having fun!

5. Good Personality

Since you will be dealing most with your fitness trainer, it is a good idea to look for somebody with a pleasing personality -- somebody you can be comfortable with. It is best to hire the services of somebody whom you can easily get along with, and who you will enjoy spending time with during your sessions.

When it comes down to it, some of the best help that you can get in your workout program can come from a professional person who knows what he is doing. Hence, it is best to choose the best person who can give you the services and attention that you need so that you will never get bored during your workouts again.
